This week we have a quick look at the tricky subject of ‘pass’ and ‘fail’ and how the meanings change depending on the situation.
If you want to get technical these are called collocations because they are verbs that automatically go with nouns. When you are learning English it’s a good idea to try doing this. When you learn a new noun learn the verbs that are associated with it, and by doing this you are increasing your knowledge of the language.
When you are studying, remember that:
You take a test or examination first of all (neutral) and then, if you are successful you pass (positive). However, if you are unsuccessful, you fail your examination (negative).
Also remember that doctors carry out an examination to check your health, and if your eyesight is failing you need glasses.
