New LAL Activity Leaders

The annual process of recruiting the LAL Torbay Activity Staff has now been completed and the new staff taken on for the role have now started work in their new jobs.

Simon Nelson, Leisure Manager at Torbay, and his assistant, Vicki Lyall, have had a very busy few months prior to the season, in going through the rigorous task of interviewing the many applicants for the position and then undertaking the training days to prepare the new staff ready for the busy summer ahead.
Simon said, I think people assume that these people just grow on trees and appear every year. However, it is far more involved than that. It is a long and arduous task going through the many applications we receive from around the world, and then the interviewing process, then selecting the right people, and then moulding them into a hard working and streamline team of around 45 Activity Staff.

We are very lucky in the fact that we have around a 40% return of staff, some having been with us for 4 or 5 years now. They play such a big part in the success of the team and their vast experience is so valuable to the ongoing training of the new recruits each year.

Vicki and I are very proud in the progress we have made over the last few years and take so much satisfaction in hearing from our many providers how good our leaders are and what a credit they are to LAL and the language school industry.
The season is over in the blink of an eye and the Activity Leaders will play such an important part in the success of the summer. Their input can make all the difference, however hard we have worked to prepare them and the planning of the summer as a whole, and a big part of how well this goes will be down to them.

The whole process will start again in early 2011. Our picture shows a mixture of experienced and new staff at Clennon Valley prior to our first big Saturday trip to Woodlands Adventure Park.

LAL Language Centres UK Ltd are now Highly Trusted Sponsors

LAL's UK language centres are now part of the UKBA Highly Trusted Sponsor List. This list relates to the issuing of certain visas to non-visa nationals under Tier 4 of the UK Border Agency System.

Under Tier 4 of the points-based system, all sponsors receive an 'A' or 'B' rating. The new Highly Trusted sponsor category is a further segmentation of this sponsor rating system. It is designed to identify those sponsors who have the highest levels of compliance with their sponsor obligations, and whose students are showing the greatest compliance with the terms of their visa or permission to stay.

A sponsor with a Highly Trusted sponsor licence will be able to offer the following courses to international students under Tier 4 (General) of the points-based system:

  • courses at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 3 and
  • equivalents; and courses below degree level that encompass a work placement.

Other sponsors will no longer be able to offer these courses.
