Purpose:   

To work with the Leisure Manager in guaranteeing the smooth running of all on-site activities. This post involves the ability to help plan, manage and execute a successful activity programme as well as ensuring all staff on activities are thoroughly prepared for their task.

 

This role is also to assume all responsibilities and obligations expected of an Activity Leader.

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated summer school and operational departments at LAL London. Please see LAL Staffing Structure at the bottom of this document.

 

Job Description

The role of Activities Co-ordinator is an important one, directly concerned with the welfare and enjoyment of overseas junior students. This requires the post-holder to not only perform all the duties expected from an Activity Leader but to also work with the Leisure Manager in ensuring the successful execution of a full range of programmed activities and events onsite.

 

The ideal Activity Co-ordinator will be fun, energetic, outgoing and have the ability to lead and motivate a team of Activity Leaders. They will have a detailed understanding of a variety of sports and activities.

 

There will be a strong emphasis on assisting the Leisure Manager with planning and overseeing the activity programme as well as training staff and ensuring everyone on activity duties (staff, students and International Group Leaders) have all the information they need.

 

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To live on-site, board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day.
  • To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
  • To assist the Leisure Manager in all aspects of planning and delivering the activity programme.
  • To take initiative in designing new activities and ideas for the leisure programme and to ensure all activities are well promoted to staff and students, ensuring an enthusiastic response to the whole activity programme.
  • To assist the Leisure Manager in the allocation of staff to the activity programme.
  • To assist the Leisure Manager in ensuring that there is always a clear plan and rota outlining the activity programme, produced well in advance.
  • To occasionally deputise for the Leisure Manager and be responsible for the leisure programme during that time.
  • To lead all staff assigned to activity duty when necessary.
  • To lead students on activities.
  • To actively encourage students to take a full part in the leisure programme.
  • To ensure that all aspects of the leisure programme run smoothly and safely.
  • To assist with arrival and departure airport transfers.
  • To assist in daily administrative and pastoral tasks as requested by line management, including meal monitoring.
  • To assist all students, International Group Leaders and LAL agents to derive the maximum benefit from the course.
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated host school and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To assist students in being on time for meals, transport arrangements and all planned activities.
  • To accompany and lead students on excursions, ensuring their well-being and safety.
  • To assist House Parents, where necessary, in ensuring students are in their accommodation on time for bed.
  • To provide House Parent cover if there is no other possibility of cover from an Activity Leader.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or the designated host school into disrepute.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position. To wear a uniform for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Centre Manager or Leisure Manager.
  • To read and be fully conversant with the employee handbook and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent to UK level 4
  • Previous summer school experience
  • Strong knowledge and experience of summer school activities
  • Good knowledge of either sports and/or arts & crafts/performing arts
  • Good knowledge of the local and surrounding area
  • Experience of working with young people
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Endless energy and enthusiasm
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to both lead and support a team
  • Responsible approach to working with juniors
  • Ability to work under pressure and supervise a team
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • Interest in activities and local culture
  • Clean criminal record

Desirable

  • NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or equivalent in a relevant discipline

  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • First Aid certificate/Life Guard certificate
  • Sports Coaching or relevant non-sporting qualification or experience
  • Computer literate
  • Driving licence
  • At least 1 year’s work experience in a similar role

Pay Scale and Other Information

Gross Basic Salary*                                                                  £285

 

Additional holiday entitlement 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked based on Total Basic Salary, paid at the end of the contract where holiday has not been taken.

 


A further £5 per week to basic salary for each qualifying point:

  • Sports Coaching or relevant non-sporting qualification or experience: 2 points (£10)
  • Previous other UK Summer School experience: 1 point (£5)
  • First Aid certificate**: 1 point (£5)
  • Previous experience in a similar role: 1 point (£5)

 

Total Gross Maximum weekly remuneration***                    £341.38

 

Returning Staff will receive:

An extra £15 per week Loyalty Bonus for their second year, with an additional £5 for each extra year they have worked at our summer schools, plus entitlement to our Early Bird Bonus and access to our Referral Bonus.

 

Working week = 5.5 days (up to 48 hours per week)

(overtime is not paid but excessive hours can be taken off in lieu in agreement with Summer Schools Operations Manager)

*Gross Basic Salary refers to Basic Salary plus Contract Completion Bonus (£25) upon successful completion of your agreed contract. Board (£30) and Accommodation (£33.11) allowances have already been deducted from this figure

All bonuses (Contract Completion, Loyalty, Referral and Early Bird) and expense reimbursements are subject to successful completion of agreed contract unless stated otherwise.

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and National Insurance Contributions), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates.
