Purpose:   

To be responsible for and oversee the welfare of all students, both on and off-site of the designated summer school. This position involves working on weekends and other unsocial hours.

 

To both lead and support all house parents in ensuring students receive ample care and supervision whilst maintaining discipline throughout the course.

Organisation structure:   

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated summer school and operational departments at LAL London. Please see LAL Staffing Structure at the bottom of this document.

Job Description

The role of Welfare Officer is one of high responsibility, directly concerned with the welfare of overseas junior students as well as the training, management and support of all welfare staff. This requires the post-holder to take overall responsibility for the preparation, installation, operation and finalisation of all welfare provisions outlined in the staff handbook and discussed by the Centre Manager and/or Summer Schools Operations Manager.

 

The ideal Welfare Manager will be highly organised and conscientious in their approach to welfare issues. They will have successful experience of leading and motivating a team of House Parents as well as effectively dealing with the First Aid the pastoral need of overseas junior students.

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To attend an expenses-paid induction day prior to the beginning of the contract (day and location to be confirmed) and to have read and be fully conversant with the employee handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
  • To live on-site, board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day (which will include the day after students have left).
  • To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
  • To deal with and be responsible for the individual welfare needs of every student in the summer school.
  • To brief House Parents of their responsibilities and then both lead and support them throughout the course.
  • To be responsible for allocating students to accommodation houses and rooms, and arranging any student moves, after consultation with Centre Manager.
  • To work with the Centre Manager in ensuring the House Parents rota is adequate for the needs of the course.
  • To advise students on coping and dealing with unfamiliar situations.
  • To be on call for any welfare problems.
  • To ensure proper discipline is maintained throughout the duration of the course.
  • To communicate any welfare problems to the Centre Manager.
  • To liaise with House Parents to find appropriate solutions to students’ problems.
  • To liaise with International Group Leaders with regard to the welfare of students in their charge.
  • To actively ensure that damage is kept to a minimum and all damages are investigated and followed up.
  • To maintain the Accident/Incident Logs regarding any problems or illnesses to students or staff.
  • To check or arrange for classrooms to be checked every morning when there are lessons, for student absenteeism.
  • To arrange doctor/dentist/hospital appointments as required and accompanying students accordingly or arranging the same.
  • To actively promote the welfare of LAL Summer Schools’ clients, including agents, students, International Group Leaders at all times.
  • To assist all International Group Leaders and LAL agents with regard to their students’ welfare.
  • To actively discourage students from engaging in improper behaviour, including sexual liaisons, bullying, rowdiness or any other activity which could be of harm to other students or bring LAL or the host school into disrepute.
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated host school and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To assist students, where necessary, in being on time for meals, transport arrangements and all planned activities. 
  • To assist House Parents, where necessary, in ensuring students are in their accommodation in time for bed.
  • To address any student, IGL or Host site representatives’ issues, complaints or suggestions by ensuring that the relevant LAL staff are made aware.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of the school’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or the host school into disrepute.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; smart casual for the office, LAL uniform for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To occasionally cover a House Parent on his/her day off.
  • To ensure, when not on duty, that the Deputy Welfare Officer is appraised of all necessary information.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Centre Manager.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent
  • Previous Summer School experience
  • Experience of working with young people
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Computer literate with emphasis on Microsoft Word , Outlook  & Excel
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to both lead and support a team
  • A good understanding of children’s welfare
  • Responsible approach to working with juniors
  • Ability to work under pressure and be adaptable
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • Clean criminal record

Desirable

  • NVQ (National Vocational Qualification;
    see www.qca.org.uk/14-19/qualifications/index_nvqs.htm) or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • First Aid certificate/Life Guard certificate
  • Good knowledge of either sports and/or arts & crafts/performing arts
  • Driving licence
  • Previous summer school experience in a similar role

Pay Scale and Other Information

Gross Basic Salary*                                          £380

 

Additional holiday entitlement 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked based on Total Basic Salary, paid at the end of the contract where holiday has not been taken.

 

 

An further £5 to basic salary for each qualifying poi

  • Recognised NVQ or equivalent in Welfare or other relevant subject: 2 points (£10)
  • 2 years relevant experience with juniors: 1 point (£5)
  • First Aid Certificate**: 2 points (£10)
  • Previous other summer school experience: 1 point (£5)

 

Total Gross Maximum weekly remuneration***                    £451.64

 

Returning Staff will receive:

An extra £15 per week Loyalty Bonus for their second year, with an additional £5 for each extra year they have worked at our summer schools.

Plus entitlement to our Early Bird Bonus and access to our Referral Bonus.

 

Working week = 5.5 days (up to 48 hours per week)

(overtime is not paid but excessive hours can be taken off in lieu in agreement with Summer Schools Operations Manager)

*Gross Basic salary refers to Basic Salary plus Contract Completion Bonus (£35) upon successful completion of your agreed contract). Board (£30) and Accommodation (£33.11) allowances have already been deducted from this figure

NB: All bonuses (Contract Completion, Loyalty, Referral and Early Bird) and expense reimbursements are subject to successful completion of agreed contract, unless stated otherwise.

 

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and NIC), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates
