Purpose:   

To implement, co-ordinate and manage the Academic Programme for the full duration of the course with the assistance of the Academic Department at LAL London.

 

To both lead and support all academic staff in ensuring students receive the best possible education during their stay.

Organisation structure:   

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated summer school and operational departments at LAL London. Please see LAL Staffing Structure at the bottom of this document.

Job Description

The role of ADOS is one of high responsibility, directly concerned with the education and welfare of overseas junior students as well as the management of all academic staff on site. This requires the post-holder to engage in all aspects of summer school work as directed by the Centre Manager and the Academic Department at LAL London.

 

The ideal ADOS will be conscientious and organised with a high regard for the education of overseas junior students. They will have experience of managing a team of teachers, delivering effective teacher training and conducting developmental observations.

 

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To attend an expenses-paid induction day prior to the beginning of the contract (date and location to be arranged) and to have read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
  • To live on-site with board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day (which will include the night after students have left).
  • To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
  • To act in a responsive manner to all academic requests/concerns put forward by staff, students and International Group Leaders.
  • To brief teachers on all aspects of their responsibilities, including teaching and the leisure programme (activities and excursions).
  • To organise and carry out training sessions for teachers.
  • To observe lessons and give teachers feedback.
  • To manage the academic staff as necessary to ensure all policies, procedures and deadlines are adhered to.
  • To administer the placement testing and class allocation of all students.
  • To maintain accurate class lists for all students and manage changes appropriately and promptly.
  • To maintain accurate and up-to-date records of work, classroom registers, lesson plans and any other administrative records as required by the British Council and ensure that teachers do the same.
  • To administer, explain and follow the prescribed syllabus and develop strategies for successful learning outcomes in accordance with directives from the Centre Manager and the Academic Department of LAL London.
  • To ensure that all teachers are actively linking the academic programme with the leisure programme through meaningful activities in the classroom.
  • To work with the Centre Manager in ensuring the teachers rota is adequate for the needs of the academic syllabus.
  • To take responsibility for the successful academic outcomes of all students taught, administer the setting of progress tests and ensure that teachers do the same.
  • To administer the issuing of individual student reports and attendance certificates to all students.
  • To submit to periodic classroom inspections by line management, academic staff from LAL London and the British Council.
  • To issue end-of-course feedback reports on the summer school and submit to appraisals by line management.
  • To address any student, International Group Leader or Host site representatives issues, complaints or suggestions by ensuring that the relevant LAL staff are made aware.
  • To appraise all members of the teaching staff and submit reports to the Centre Manager.
  • To cover for teachers in the event of their sickness and/or absence, i.e. to prepare and teach dynamic and communicative lessons across a range of levels to multinational classes comprising students aged 9 – 17 years.
  • To assist in daily administrative tasks as requested by line management.
  • To be fully engaged in the rigours of summer school work.
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated host school and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or the designated host school into disrepute.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; smart casual for the office and teaching.  Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To assist and/or teach Trinity Exam preparation, One-to-One or Intensive English (information and instruction will be given) where necessary.
  • To ensure, when not on duty, that the Senior Teacher is apprised of all necessary information.
  • To occasionally deputise for the Centre Manager in their absence.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Centre Manager.

Notes

  • A teaching session comprises 2 x 90 minute lessons.
  • Except in very exceptional circumstances, teachers will NOT be actively involved in residential pastoral or welfare duties such as waking and putting to bed of students. This should not detract from the fact that all staff still have a duty of care towards minors while on site.
  • A teaching workshop carried out by the Academic Director or one of our DELTA qualified teacher trainers will take place either during the preparation period or after the first few lesson on week 1. The topics covered will be discussed with the ADOS prior to this workshop.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or NQF level 6 equivalent*
  • Current Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL Certificate, PGCE or equivalent**
  • Minimum three years’ experience teaching
  • Computer literate with emphasis on Microsoft Word  & Excel
  • Previous summer school experience
  • Effective people management skills
  • Ability to both lead and support a team
  • Minimum one year’s experience of teaching juniors (under 17)
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Excellent communication and proven management skills
  • Responsible approach to working with juniors
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of Young Learners' ELT materials
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • Clean criminal record

Desirable

  • DELTA or Trinity Diploma or British Council equivalent
  • Previous experience in academic management at ADOS/Senior Teacher level
  • Proof of materials development
  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • First Aid certificate/Life Guard certificate
  • Driving licence

**equivalent course comprising a minimum of 120 contact hours including input, lesson planning, feedback, peer observation, observation of experienced teachers and tutorials, including a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching practice with real students and external validation. PGCE qualifications must be in an associated subject (e.g. EFL/English/Modern Languages).

Pay Scale and Other Information

Gross Basic Salary*                                                                     £405

 

Additional holiday entitlement 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked based on Total Basic Salary, paid at the end of the contract where holiday has not been taken.

 


An additional £5 per week to basic salary for each qualifying point:

  • Cambridge DELTA, Trinity Diploma or Masters in TEFL: 2 points (£10)
  • 5 years’ EFL teaching experience**: 2 points (£10)
  • Previous experience in similar position; 2 points (£10)

 

Total Gross Maximum weekly remuneration***                    £487.85

 

Returning Staff will receive:

An extra £15 per week Loyalty Bonus for their second year, with an additional £5 for each extra year they have worked at our summer schools, plus entitlement to our Early Bird Bonus and access to our Referral Bonus.

 

Working week = 5.5 days (up to 48 hours per week)

(overtime is not paid but excessive hours can be taken off in lieu in agreement with Summer Schools Operations Manager)

*Gross Basic salary refers to Basic Salary plus Contract Completion Bonus (£50) upon successful completion of your agreed contract). Board (£30) and Accommodation (£33.11) allowances have already been deducted from this figure.

 

**EFL teaching experience will not apply to work performed solely for LAL - see Loyalty Bonus

 

***Gross Basic plus holiday pay and qualifying points

 

NB: All bonuses (Contract Completion, Loyalty, Referral and Early Bird) and expense reimbursements are subject to successful completion of agreed contract, unless stated otherwise.

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and NIC), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates.
