Purpose:   

To teach English to foreign students aged 9 – 17 years and participate in programmed activities and excursions. This position involves working at weekends and other unsocial hours.

 

To support the ADOS with the effective running of the academic programme and to assume the role on a cover basis when necessary.

Organisation structure:   

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated summer school and operational departments at LAL London. Please see LAL Staffing Structure at the bottom of this document.

Job Description

The role of Summer School Senior Teacher is one of responsibility, directly concerned with the education and welfare of overseas junior students. Whilst performing the same duties as a Residential Teacher, the Senior Teacher is also expected to assist the ADOS in ensuring the successful running of the academic programme. This will involve keeping abreast of all relevant administrative details and issues whilst maintaining an open flow of information between all academic staff. The Senior Teacher will also be expected to act as cover ADOS when necessary.

 

The ideal Senior Teacher will be conscientious and organised with a high regard for the education of overseas junior students. They will be both a fun and energetic teacher and a competent administrator. They will also keep the flow of communication open within the academic department to ensure that all parties are apprised of all relevant information.

 

LAL use our own course book, written and designed by our academic staff across the globe to help our teachers provide unforgettable lessons.  Newly qualified teachers will find themselves fully supported by our detailed syllabus, resources and academic management team, while the more seasoned teacher will be allowed a greater degree of freedom in the classroom.

 

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To live on-site and/or in a host family (to be discussed at interview), board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day (which will include the night after students have left).
  • To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
  • To assist the ADOS in the placement testing and class allocation of all students.
  • To actively encourage and maintain open communication between all academic staff
  • To assist teachers in actively linking the leisure programme with meaningful lessons/activities in the classroom.
  • To maintain accurate and up-to-date records of work, classroom registers, lesson plans and any other administrative records as required by the British Council.
  • To prepare and teach dynamic and communicative lessons across a range of levels to multinational classes comprising students aged 9 – 17 years for a minimum of five teaching sessions a week (one further session will be allocated for preparation and administration). 
  • To take responsibility for the successful academic outcomes of all students taught including the setting and marking of progress tests.
  • To follow the prescribed syllabus and develop strategies for successful learning in accordance with directives from line management. 
  • To write individual student reports for all students taught.
  • To submit to periodic classroom inspections by line management and the British Council.
  • To issue end-of-course feedback reports on the summer school and submit to appraisals by line management.
  • To read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
  • To be fully engaged in the rigours of summer school work.
  • To actively participate in excursion and activity sessions both on and off-site as required by line manager.
  • To assist in daily administrative tasks as requested by line management, including meal monitoring.
  • To address any student, International Group Leader or Host site representatives issues, complaints or suggestions by ensuring that the relevant LAL staff are made aware.
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated host school and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or the designated host school into disrepute.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; smart casual for the office and teaching, LAL uniform for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To assist and/or teach Trinity Exam preparation, Intensive English or One-to-One lessons (information and instruction will be given) where necessary.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Summer Schools Operations Manager, Centre Manager and/or ADOS.
  • To occasionally deputise for the ADOS.

Notes

  • A teaching session comprises 2 x 90 minute lessons.
  • An activity/excursion session would be either an afternoon or evening. In certain cases, you may be required to accompany students on a full-day excursion, which would comprise of an early start and a late finish. Time off in lieu would be given in this case.
  • One session per week will be for teachers to use for lesson preparation and other academic administration.
  • Except in very exceptional circumstances, teachers will NOT be actively involved in residential pastoral or welfare duties such as waking and putting to bed of students. This should not detract from the fact that all staff still have a duty of care towards minors while on site.
  • A teaching workshop carried out by either the ADoS or one of our DELTA qualified teacher trainers will form part of the preparation period at the beginning of the appointment. You will also be observed at least once by a DELTA qualified member of staff, where you will be invited to take part in a feedback session at the end of the lesson.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or NQF level 6 equivalent
  • Current Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL Certificate, PGCE or equivalent course comprising a minimum of 120 contact hours including input, lesson planning, feedback, peer observation, observation of experienced teachers and tutorials, including a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching practice with real students and external validation. PGCE qualifications must be in an associated subject (e.g. EFL/English/Modern Languages).

  • First Aid certificate/Life Guard certificate

Pay Scale and Other Information

Gross Basic Salary*                                                                  £330

 

Additional holiday entitlement 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked based on Total Basic Salary, paid at the end of the contract where holiday has not been taken.

 



A further £5 per week to basic salary for each qualifying point:

  • Cambridge DELTA, Trinity Diploma or Masters in TEFL: 2 points (£10)
  • 2 or more full years’ EFL teaching experience: 2 points (£10)
  • Previous other UK Summer School experience; 1 points (£5)


Total Gross Maximum weekly remuneration***                    £390.00

 

Returning Staff will receive:

An extra £15 per week Loyalty Bonus for their second year, with an additional £5 for each extra year they have worked at our summer schools, plus entitlement to our Early Bird Bonus and access to our Referral Bonus.

 

Working week = 5.5 days (up to 48 hours per week)

(overtime is not paid but excessive hours can be taken off in lieu in agreement with Summer Schools Operations Manager)

 

*Gross Basic salary refers to BasicSalary plus Contract Completion Bonus (£40) upon successful completion of your agreed contract). Board (£30) and Accommodation (£33.11) allowances have already been deducted from this figure

NB: All bonuses (Contract Completion, Loyalty, Referral and Early Bird) and expense reimbursements are subject to successful completion of agreed contract, unless stated otherwise.

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and NIC), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates.
