CELTA courses at LAL Torbay - more information

What does the syllabus cover?

The syllabus is laid down by Cambridge and covers:

  • Practical awareness of the language – grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
  • Practical awareness of the learners – their needs and motivation.
  • Practical ability in developing the skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing.
  • Knowledge of materials – course books, supplementary books and other teaching aids.
  • Classroom management and lesson planning.
  • Techniques and procedures in presentation and practice of new language.
  • Professional development.

The CELTA course is stimulating but demanding, and lasts for 120 hours. During this time you will receive around 50 hours of workshops or lectures, complete 6 hours of assessed teaching practice and spend 6 hours observing experienced and qualified teachers. You will be given plenty of help with lesson planning, with tutorials to help ensure you are getting the most from your course. You can choose to do the course full-time or part-time.

The full-time intensive course runs over four weeks (from 08.45-17.30) and is particularly demanding, but suits people who are keen to get qualified quickly. You will be teaching every other day, and will need to work most evenings and weekends on lesson planning and written assignments.

The new part-time course will run once a week on Wednesdays  (08.45-16.30). It will start in October and run for six months. You will be teaching every other week and consequently will have more time for lesson planning and assignments.

Is the CELTA for you?

You must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum level of education equivalent to university entrance and preferably a degree.  You should be a native English speaker or have an equivalent standard.  You don’t need previous teaching experience, though some applicants will be qualified teachers who want a change of direction.

How much will it cost you?

The course fees are £1150 in 2012. There are no hidden extras beyond the requirement to buy a grammar book (Practical English Usage by Michael Swan).  You will have to pay an initial non-refundable deposit of £250.00 when we accept you onto the course.  Later you will have to pay the balance of £900 six weeks before the start of the course.  If we cancel the course for any reason we will refund your money in full. This rarely happens, but please note that we do require a minimum number of trainees to run a course.

We cannot refund your money if you cancel any time after 6 weeks before the course starts.  You may like to take out insurance to cover this possibility.

Where can you stay?

The school can arrange accommodation with host families or in the school hotel.
You can also find self-catering accommodation in the Torbay area.

What is the school like?

LAL Torbay is the largest year round language school in Torbay.  It is close to both the sea front and the station.  You will find a well-stocked library of course books and supplementary books plus all the usual equipment like photocopiers, video recorders, OHPs and CD/cassette recorders.  You can buy hot drinks, snacks and lunch at the school cafe.

Will I need to come for an interview?

Yes.  When we receive your application, we will invite you for an interview.  This will give you an opportunity to meet us and to see the school.  It also gives us a good idea whether the fairly rigorous and demanding course is for you!  To help us in assessing your skills we will ask you to do a pre-interview task before you arrive and two short writing tasks on the day of the interview.
