Travel and Transport

Orientating yourself

Cape Town is situated at the south-western point of Africa. With Table Mountain behind you and the harbour before you, you are facing north. On the eastern slopes of Table Mountain we find the Southern Suburbs, while on the western slopes we have the Atlantic Seaboard. Both of these are south of central Cape Town and you can take either route south to Cape Point. East of Cape Town is the airport and the Cape Flats.

The N1 heads towards the winelands, through the mountains to the Karoo and destinations in the north (Johannesburg).

The N2 heads east past the airport towards Somerset West, the Garden Route and Hermanus/Overberg. The N7 heads north towards the West Coast and Namibia.

Car hire

You can hire cars through the LAL Cape Town Travel Centre.

South Africa has a good road network, mostly tarred and well signposted. The speed limit is 120km/h on highways and 60-80km/h around town. Motor cars drive on the LEFT-hand side of the road.

Public buses

Services such as Golden Arrow - the government buses - to the V&A Waterfront can be found on Beach Road.

Minibuses

Minibuses to Sea Point, Camps bay, Green Point or the city centre can be found on Sea Point Main Road. When using minibuses, please try to give the driver the exact amount of coins. Do not give the driver notes (e.g. R10 or R20), as the driver often does not have change. It is normally R5 when using a minibus to the above-mentioned places. Please do not use minibuses after dark.

Taxis

Meter Taxi is R12 per km. Please phone them to organise a taxi, or ask Security at the school. Please use meter taxis after 19h00 as public buses and most of the minibuses stop operating after this time. You can contact Marine Taxis on Tel: 021 434 0434; they charge about R70 to the city centre. Please ask for fares beforehand. The security guard in Reception has a direct telephone to the taxi company.

Remember to take all your belongings before getting off public transport. Do not leave things behind, as they do not have a lost and found department.
