Language of Teaching: English/Italian.
Description: The course is structured in both lectures and practice of the language. The lecturer will use materials such as CDs, depliants, maps, papers and magazines, lyrics of songs in Italian and Italian movies. The course aims at showing different aspects of the Italian language, such as the cultural aspect, as well as improving students’ Italian language skills to increase their opportunities in the job market. Each student, excluding beginners, will sit a placement test prior to the start of the course.
Output: certificate of attendance, ECTS.

Objectives: The main objective of teaching and learning Italian is to equip students with the necessary knowledge of the language and of socio-cultural aspects of the Italian culture to express themselves in a simple but understandable way. Students will develop communication competencies to interact with people in different contexts and will also improve their knowledge of the language to express themselves correctly in written and orally. Moreover, the direct contact with Italian culture and society will allow students to have a better understanding of the language; it is also an opportunity to compare the structure and customs of Italian society with that of the student.
Programme: The course will focus both on the grammatical aspects and on the practical use of the language, referring particularly to the following:
- Orthography and phonology: consonants, vowels, syllables, accents;
- Morphology: articles, prepositions, pronouns, nouns, adjectives and verbs;
- Elements of syntax
- Italian lexicon.
The course will include practical exercises such as listening, reading and writing.
Methodology: For the language part, classes will be based on conversation in Italian along with practical exercises such as active listening, fast reading, analytic reading, puzzles and quizzes and competitions. Moreover, activities are foreseen such as PLO1 and PLS2 and also games. Students’ interaction is necessary. Grammar is taught starting from the text and not from the rule and students will try to deduce the rules and to be active during explanations. Italian will be compared to English to underline similarities and differences and lectures will be paired to practical sessions.
