Purpose:   

To teach English to overseas students as required. Optional participation in afternoon and evening activities & excursions by arrangement at interview.

Organisation structure:   

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at LAL London and operational departments at LAL Torbay.

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To prepare lessons and teach English to speakers of other languages, across a range of levels to multi national classes as required by academic managers taking responsibility for the successful learning outcomes of all students.
  • To set homework appropriate to the student’s course, with subsequent, relevant feedback on a daily basis.
  • To arrange and carry out regular progress and level-exit testing and report to academic managers on progress of students in class to facilitate ongoing planning and the addition of new students.
  • To follow the prescribed syllabus and content of courses, while developing strategies for successful learning in accordance with directives from the line management.  
  • To read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
  • To attend induction & preparation sessions as required.
  • To assist in the placement testing and placement as required.
  • To maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, as advised by the Academic Department.
  • To induct ALL students with Health & Safety procedures according to LAL’s H&S Policy.
  • To take responsibility for the overall presentation of the learning environment and ensure the classroom is prepared in advance of the class starting.
  • To submit to periodic classroom observations by line management and the British Council.
  • To submit to appraisals by line management.
  • To keep abreast of pedagogic innovations in ELT and attend teacher development sessions.
  • To attend weekly staff meetings.
  • To protect the property and equipment of LAL London, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL into disrepute.
  • To dress according to the LAL Dress Policy.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the General Manager and/or DOS and/or ADOS.

Person Specification

Essential

  • First degree or equivalent
  • Current Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL Certificate, or equivalent course comprising a minimum of 120 contact hours including input, lesson planning, feedback, peer observation, observation of experienced teachers and tutorials, including a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching practice with real students and external validation.
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Excellent communication skills & ability to work well with others
  • Native speaker or same level of competence
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to teach English effectively at all levels
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • To comply, where relevant, with Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult legislation as and when it is introduced, which may include holding a current Enhanced CRB Disclosure and entry onto the ISA Vetting and Barring Scheme lists.

 

Desirable

  • An interest in Blended Learning and the use of electronic resources
  • Experience in teaching English for Business
  • Experience in exam preparation teaching – Cambridge Suite, IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC.
  • Knowledge of the CEFR
  • Experience in the delivery of Learner Training
  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • Good knowledge of Central London and/or the Twickenham area
  • Previous ELT experience in a variety of teaching / learning contexts


This position requires commitment, a flexible approach and energy.

 

Pay Scale and Other Information

Working hours to be negotiated.
Holiday entitlement = 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked.

 

  • Basic Teaching Rate = £14.78 per hour
  • Excursion Rate   =  £25.00 per half day plus expenses (Excursion means a trip for either half or a full day, accompanying students)
  • Activity Rate  =  £8 per hour (Activity means a local event or orientation tour )

 

An additional £0.25 per hour to teaching basic salary for each qualifying point:

 

  • Cambridge DELTA, Trinity Diploma or Masters in TEFL: 3 points = £0.75/hour
  • CELTA grade A or B: 2 points = £0.50/hour
  • 2 years’ IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge Exams teaching experience*: 2 points = £0.50/hour
  • 2 years’ Business English teaching experience*: 2 points = £0.50

* Subject to a proven record through recent references (references to be taken up by LAL. Pre-written references will not be sufficient) 

The School opens on all statutory holidays except Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day (or the given days in lieu of those holidays where they fall on a weekend).

You will be expected to work on all statutory holidays which fall in the school’s timetable, except where annual leave has been agreed.

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and NIC), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates.

  • A lesson comprises 45 minutes.
  • Teachers will be requested to attend unpaid teaching workshops, carried out by either a member of the LAL Academic Department or a member of the teaching staff. Any member of the teaching staff who carries out a workshop will be paid.
  • You will be formally observed at least once a year by an LAL Academic Department member of staff, with a feedback session at the end of the lesson. In addition, informal short observations may be carried out.
  • In the event of a successful interview, the applicant will be offered the position and a reply in the first instance either by email or in writing will be required.
  • A formal offer, confirming location, hours, dates & remuneration will be sent upon receipt of your email acceptance of the position. This will need to be signed and posted and/or scanned and emailed by return.

  • An electronic version of the Employee Handbook, containing the general terms and conditions of employment, will be made available in advance, with acceptance of these terms to be signed at induction on your first day.
  • There will be an initial probationary period of one month followed by an assessment.  A further probationary period of two months will be followed by a review. On completion of six months’ service you will be entitled to company sick pay.
