Purpose:   

To lead students and assist LAL Summer School staff on activities, excursions and transfers whilst also assisting in other non-academic aspects of the designated summer school. This position involves working on weekends and other unsocial hours.

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated summer school and operational departments at LAL London. Please see LAL Staffing Structure at the bottom of this document.

Job Description

The role of Activity Leader is an important one, directly concerned with the welfare and enjoyment of overseas junior students. This requires the post-holder to assist in a full range of activities and excursions both on and off site. Activity Leaders will also assist with airport transfers and offer constructive assistance as required to all aspects of the summer school operation.

 

The ideal Activity Leader will be fun, energetic and outgoing as well as have a high level of responsibility and authority. We aim for all our Activity Leaders to have as much fun as possible whilst always acting with high regard for the rules and policies of LAL and maintaining discipline throughout the course.

 

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To live on-site, board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day (which will include the night after students have left).
  • To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
  • To actively encourage students to take part in the leisure programme.
  • To assist with arrival and departure airport transfers.
  • To assist all students, International Group Leaders and LAL agents to derive the maximum benefit from the course.
  • To consistently ensure the welfare of the students remains paramount.
  • To ensure that all aspects of the leisure programme run smoothly and safely.
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated host school and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To assist students in being on time for meals, transport arrangements and all planned activities.
  • To accompany and lead students on excursions, activities and transfers to and from the airport, ensuring their well-being and safety.
  • To assist House Parents, where necessary, in ensuring students are in their accommodation on time for bed.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or the designated host school into disrepute.
  • To assist in daily administrative and pastoral tasks as requested by line management, including meal monitoring.
  • To always act as a positive role model and representative of LAL whilst on site or in the presence of students or InternationalGroup Leaders.
  • To address any student, International Group Leader or Host site representatives issues, complaints or suggestions by ensuring that the relevant LAL staff are made aware.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; to wear a uniform for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To provide House Parent cover if needed.
  • To be responsible for any particular aspect of the course as designated by the Leisure Manager.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Centre Manager or Leisure Manager.
  • To read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).

 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent to UK level 4
  • Strong command of the English language
  • Good knowledge of either sports and/or arts & crafts/performing arts
  • Experience of working with young people
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Endless energy and enthusiasm
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must work well as part of a team
  • Responsible approach to working with juniors
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • Interest in activities and local culture
  • Clean criminal record

Desirable

  • NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or equivalent in a relevant discipline;

  • Previous summer school experience
  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • First Aid certificate/Life Guard certificate
  • Good knowledge of the local area
  • Computer literate
  • Driving licence
  • At least 1 year’s work experience in a similar role

Pay Scale and Other Information

Gross Basic Salary*                                                                   £240

 

Additional holiday entitlement 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked based on Total Basic Salary, paid at the end of the contract where holiday has not been taken.

 

 

Add an additional £5 to gross basic salary for each qualifying point:

  • Sports Coaching or relevant non-sporting qualification or experience: 2 points (£10)
  • First Aid Certificate**: 1 point (£5)
  • Previous other UK summer school experience: 1 point (£5)

 

Total Gross Maximum weekly remuneration***                    £287.76

 

Returning Staff will receive:

An extra £15 per week Loyalty Bonus for their second year, with an additional £5 for each extra year they have worked at our summer schools, plus entitlement to our Early Bird Bonus and access to our Referral Bonus.

 

Working week = 5.5 days (up to 48 hours per week)

(overtime is not paid but excessive hours can be taken off in lieu in agreement with Summer Schools Operations Manager)

 

*Gross Basic Salary refers to Basic Salary plus Contract Completion Bonus (£10) upon successful completion of your agreed contract. Board (£30) and Accommodation (£33.11) allowances have already been deducted from this figure

NB: All bonuses (Contract Completion, Loyalty, Referral and Early Bird) and expense reimbursements are subject to successful completion of agreed contract, unless stated otherwise.

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and NIC), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates.
