Purpose:   

To organise and oversee all aspects of the Leisure Programme, transport and transfers at the designated Summer School. This position involves working on weekends and other unsocial hours.

Organisation structure:   

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated Summer School and operational departments at LAL London. Please see LAL Staffing Structure at the bottom of this document.

Job Description

The role of Leisure Manager is one of high responsibility, directly concerned with the welfare and enjoyment of overseas junior students. This requires the post-holder to take overall responsibility for the preparation, installation, operation and outcomes of the Leisure Programme including off-site excursions as well as the airport transfer arrangements to and from the school. There will also be a strong reliance on team management as the Leisure Manager will be responsible for all staff whilst they are partaking in the leisure programme.

 

The ideal Leisure Manager will be extremely responsible and organised. They will be capable of leading a team and working in a highly pressurised environment. They will be familiar with the location and its surrounding places of interest as well as have a detailed understanding of a variety of sports and activities.

 

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • To attend an expenses-paid induction day prior to the beginning of the contract (date and location to be arranged) and to have read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent British Council requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
  • To live on-site, board and lodging provided as part of the salary package, from three days prior to the start of the course until the last contracted day (which will include the night after students have left).
  • To be apprised of all planned activity, excursion and transport information from within LAL, the host school and outside agencies to guarantee a smooth operation.
  • To work closely with the Activity Co-ordinator and Excursion Co-ordinator in order to ensure the delivery of a well-organised leisure programme.
  • To brief Activity Staff on all aspects of their responsibilities, including detailed briefings to all contracted staff in advance of their activities, excursions and/or transfers.
  • To liaise with transport and leisure venue providers, catering, maintenance and administrative staff in advance and during the term of hire to guarantee the smooth and safe operation of all activities, excursions and transfers.
  • To liaise with the Summer Schools Transfers Manager, the Centre Manager and Summer Schools Operations Manager to oversee smooth airport transfers to and from the summer school.
  • To be responsible for re-confirming and/or booking transfers transport as assigned by the Summer Schools Transfers Manager.
  • To oversee all arrangements concerning sporting and non-sporting activities, ensuring all students are able to enjoy a varied and well-balanced activity programme and all staff are aware of their duties and obligations before each activity/excursion/transfer commences.
  • To follow and/or, where necessary, adapt the prescribed activity programme in full, making additional activities available upon request.
  • To manage the Activity Staff as necessary to ensure all policies/procedures and deadlines are adhered to.
  • To understand and be conversant with LAL Risk Assessment methods and conclusions.
  • To ensure proper discipline is maintained throughout the duration of the course.
  • To work with the Centre Manager in ensuring the leisure staff rota is adequate for the needs of the leisure programme.
  • To nominate Activity Staff and, where deemed necessary other staff, areas of responsibility for the course as required.
  • To manage the allocation of staff to the activity and transport programme in liaison with other senior members of summer school staff.
  • To actively promote the welfare of LAL clients, including agents, students and International Group Leaders at all times.
  • To carry out all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the school as advised by the Centre Manager.
  • To address any student, International Group Leader or Host site representatives issues, complaints or suggestions by ensuring that the relevant LAL staff are made aware.
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated host school and LAL. Maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or designated host school into disrepute.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; smart casual for the office, LAL uniform for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To ensure, when not on duty, that the Activity Co-ordinator and/or the Excursion Co-ordinator is apprised of all necessary information.
  • To be fully conversant with regard to British Council Accreditation and statutory provisions for the welfare and protection of children and minors in relation to transport and activities.
  • To occasionally deputise for the Centre Manager in their absence.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Centre Manager.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to A level or equivalent to UK level 4 education
  • At least 1 year’s experience in a summer school environment
  • Meticulous and thorough approach to work
  • Thorough understanding of transport logistics
  • Computer literate with emphasis on Microsoft Word, Outlook  & Excel
  • Good knowledge of airport, unaccompanied minor and immigration issues
  • Effective people management skills
  • Experience working with young people
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Strong time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and a team mentality
  • A good understanding of child welfare
  • Responsible approach to working with juniors
  • Ability to work under pressure and be adaptable
  • Good knowledge of either sports and/or arts & crafts activities
  • Interest in activities and local culture
  • Clean criminal record

 

Desirable

  • At least 1 year’s experience in a senior role directly concerned with logistics/programming or similar
  • At least 1 year’s experience managing programmed activities
  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • Good knowledge of the area surrounding the school
  • First Aid certificate/Life Guard certificate
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • Driving licence

Pay Scale and Other Information

Gross Basic Salary*                                                                   £380

 

Additional holiday entitlement 28 days per annum (pro rata) = 12.07% of hours worked based on Total Basic Salary, paid at the end of the contract where holiday has not been taken.

 


A further £5 to basic salary for each qualifying point:

  • NVQ in a relevant discipline:  2 points (£10)
  • 2 years Activity experience with juniors: 1 point (£5)
  • First Aid Certificate**: 1 point (£5)
  • Previous other summer school experience: 1 point (£5)

 

Total Gross Maximum weekly remuneration***                    £451.64

 

Returning Staff will receive:

An extra £15 per week Loyalty Bonus for their second year, with an additional £5 for each extra year they have worked at our summer schools, plus entitlement to our Early Bird Bonus and access to our Referral Bonus.

 

Working week = 5.5 days (up to 48 hours per week)

(overtime is not paid but excessive hours can be taken off in lieu in agreement with Summer Schools Operations Manager)

 

 

*Gross Basic Salary refers to Basic Salary plus Contract Completion Bonus (£35) upon successful completion of your agreed contract. Board (£30) and Accommodation (£33.11) allowances have already been deducted from this figure

NB: All bonuses (Contract Completion, Loyalty, Referral and Early Bird) and expense reimbursements are subject to successful completion of agreed contract, unless stated otherwise.

All amounts are gross (pre-tax and NIC), weekly and subject to statutory deductions at current rates.
