About LAL Torbay

Mission Statement

At the LAL Torbay language centre we aim to provide the perfect environment for our students to learn and practise English while enjoying the special characteristics and culture of England.

About Torbay

LAL Torbay is situated in Torbay, the beautiful region of England comprising Torquay, Paignton and Brixham and known as the English Riviera.  Open year round, we are a large and successful British Council accredited school, registered with English UK and welcoming students from all around the world.

The English Riviera is well known for its long summers and mild winters, combined with long sandy beaches, palm trees, expansive leisure and sports facilities and many cultural attractions. Torbay becomes the British destination of choice - ideal for work, study or relaxation.  Ideally located on the English Channel and forty minutes’ drive away from Dartmoor National Park, the resort is the gateway to the attractions of the beautiful South West of England.

Introduction to LAL Torbay

LAL Torbay is a leading, accredited language school.  We teach English as a second language to both adults (18+) and young learners (12-17. We also train native-speakers to teach English, and are the only Cambridge DELTA training centre in Devon. Each year we accept several thousand students onto our courses.

LAL Torbay was founded in the early 1980s as the Torbay Language Centre. We were the first school of the LAL group, and we started to refer to ourselves as LAL Torbay in 2006. The school is located in a quiet residential area of Paignton: a five-minute walk from the town centre, a ten-minute walk from Goodrington Sands, and a ten-minute walk from Roundham Head, home of Hunters’ Lodge, the school residence.

The modern school buildings of LAL Torbay provide excellent conditions for English language studies.  We have 31 comfortable classrooms, a study room with computers and free internet facilities for students.  Our lounges and receptions provide the focal points for student activities and are centres for information on our extensive leisure programme.  Students and staff are also able to buy books and stationery on site, as well as sandwiches, drinks and hot food.

LAL Torbay is the base for many of our international operations, as well as for local staff. On top of a core team of permanent staff we recruit a wide range of seasonal and temporary staff each year as demand for our courses varies.

As well as our school in Paignton, LAL also has a second school in London and manages extremely popular summer residential school programmes for nine- to seventeen-year-olds at Kelly College, Taunton School, St Mary's University College and St Swithun's.  We also have sister schools in Malta, South Africa and the USA.
