Summary

The role of Summer School Teacher is one of responsibility, directly concerned with the education and welfare of overseas junior students. This requires the post-holder to engage in all aspects of teaching on a short course as directed by the Senior Teacher/ADOS and Center Manager and may include other aspects of Summer School work.

Purpose:    

To teach English to foreign students aged 13 – 18 years. This position may involve working on weekends and other unsocial hours.

Organisation structure:    

To be supported by all staff appointed to work at the designated Summer School and operational departments at LAL Fort Lauderdale.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • To read and be fully conversant with the staff handbook, relevant Child Protection issues and all pertinent CEA & LAL Summer Schools requirements prior to the start of the period of employment (documents supplied prior to start of employment).
  • To attend induction & preparation sessions as required, three days prior to the start of the course.
  • To live within easy reach of the designated Summer School such that you can arrive in time to prepare and carry out the lessons according to the schedule.
  • To carry out, as required, all tasks concerned with the setting up, administration and closing down of the course as advised by line management.
  • To assist in the placement testing and classroom allocation of all students.
  • To maintain accurate and up to date records of work, classroom registers, lesson plans and any other administrative records as required by the LAL Summer Schools.
  • To prepare and teach dynamic and communicative lessons across a range of levels to multinational classes comprising students aged 13 – 18 years for a minimum of 5 teaching sessions a week.  
  • To set and mark homework as and when required by line management.
  • To take responsibility for the successful academic outcomes of all students taught including the setting and marking of progress tests.
  • To follow the prescribed scheme of work and develop strategies for successful learning in accordance with directives from the line management.  
  • To write individual student reports to all students taught.
  • To submit to periodic classroom inspections by line management and the CEA.
  • To issue end-of-course feedback reports on the Summer School.
  • To be fully engaged in the rigours of Summer School work.
  • To assist in daily administrative and pastoral tasks as requested by line management, including meal monitoring.
  • To be present for the Certificate Ceremony (Every Friday Evening).
  • To protect the property and equipment of the designated Summer School and LAL, maintaining security and avoiding loss and/or damage in the residences.
  • To act in a seemly and professional manner with all of LAL’s agents, clients and staff and not to engage in any activity which may bring LAL or the designated Summer School into disrepute.
  • To dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position; smart casual for teaching, appropriate clothing for activities/sports and excursions. Any uniform supplied by LAL is to be returned at the end of the course.
  • To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Centre Manager and/or Senior Teacher/ADOS.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to degree level – minimum Bachelor of Arts degree
  • Experience teaching English as a second language
  • Experience of working with young people
  • Ability to provide a positive, nurturing environment suitable for young learners
  • Dynamic ‘can do’ approach to work
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Responsible approach to working with juniors
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Some knowledge of foreign cultures
  • Clean criminal record
  • Successfully pass a background check

Desirable

  • Current Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL Certificate, PGCE or equivalent*
  • Good working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • Computer literate
  • Driving license
  • Previous Summer School experience

*     equivalent course comprising a minimum of 120 contact hours including input, lesson planning, feedback, peer observation, observation of experienced teachers and tutorials, including a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching practice with real students and external validation.  PGCE qualification must be in an associated subject (e.g. EFL/English/Modern Languages).

 

Notes

A teaching session comprises 2 x 110 minute lessons.

Non-residential teachers will NOT be actively involved in residential pastoral or welfare duties such as waking and putting to bed of students. This should not detract from the fact that you still have a duty of care towards minors while on-site.


A teaching workshop carried out by either the ADOS or one of our DELTA qualified teacher trainers will form part of the preparation period at the beginning of the appointment. You will also be observed at least once by a DELTA qualified member of staff, where you will be invited to take part in a feedback session at the end of the lesson.


In the event of a successful interview, the applicant will be offered the position and a reply in the first instance either by email or in writing will be required.
