What is this programme about?

This programme is designed for volunteers that are interested in having a truly African experience while making a difference to the local wildlife and environment. Activities for this programme vary on a day-to-day basis and are dependent on weather and various other factors.

The game reserve is situated outside Port Elizabeth. The reserve is a host to a variety of wildlife including the Big 5. In addition to the mixture of grasslands, sub-tropical vegetation,
fynbos and bushveld, it also has naturally formed pockets of water, amazing rock formations and splendid flora.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Removal of alien vegetation in and around the reserve
  • Lion tracking and monitoring
  • Wildlife structures
  • Tree planting and landscaping
  • Elephant sanctuary
  • Fauna and flora work in the nursery
  • Wilderness trail walks and patrol
  • Fence patrol
  • Game Counts and Captures

What is included?

  • Return schedules transfers from airport in Port Elizabeth

  • Meals whilst on Reserve

What is not included?

  • Transport/flight from and to Cape Town to Port Elizabeth
  • Insurance

Extra Inclusions

Accommodation

  • Shared accommodation: Males and females will be separated
  • Check in: Monday by 4pm | Check out: Sunday at 6pm from the reserve
  • For arrivals before Monday and departure after Sunday, student shall make his/her own accommodation arrangements.

Meals

  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (At the Reserve, 7 days per week)

Scheduled transfers

Scheduled transfers normally run as follows (times may change slightly to accommodate volunteers)

Arrival

  • Monday: Port Elizabeth to Reserve (departs 4.00pm)

Departure

  • Saturday: Reserve to Port Elizabeth (departs 9.00am)
  • Sunday: Reserve to Port Elizabeth (departs 6.00pm)

*Please ensure that you take into consideration the schedule above when you book your inbound and outbound flights.

Eligibility

  • You have to book at least one week’s tuition before the Wildlife Volunteering programme.
  • You have to be able to converse in English.
  • Your acceptance will be dependent on issuing officer at the local home affairs office in the applicant’s home country.
  • Visas may not be extended.
